South Limburg is the southernmost region of the Netherlands, bordering Belgium in the west and south, and Germany in the east. The three countries meet at Vaals. At the region's northern boundary near Susteren the country is at its narrowest: a mere 3 miles (5 km). While the reguion has several urban centres (Maastricht, Heerlen, Sittard/Geleen) with a population of 700.000 in a 260 square mile (675 sq km) area, it is best known for its abundant natural environment. The region is accessible via the A2 and A76 motorways. Maastricht Aachen Airport is located near Beek.
